Good Morning all, today is Feb 1 2013 the first day of black history month. The importance of this month is reflect and gain knowledge of self from this day forward. Everyday this month I will bless you with knowledge and wisdom about black history. It dont matter what race you are i recommend that you learn our history. The father of Black History Month is Dr. Carter G Woodson. Dr. Carter G. Woodson was born in 1875 in New Canton, Virginia. One of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate from Harvard, Woodson dedicated his career to the field of African-American history and lobbied extensively to establish Black History Month as a nationwide institution. He also wrote many historical works, including the 1933 book The Mis-Education of the Negro. In 1926,Dr. Carter G Woodson  is also a Member of Black Greek organiztion Omega Psi Phi. Dr. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which corresponded with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.  In 1976, this celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February, and today Black History Month garners support throughout the country as people of all ethnic and social backgrounds discuss the black experience.  ASALH views the promotion of Black History Month as one of the most important components of advancing Dr. Woodson’s legacy.
